Mehdi Guerrah and Nafew Mohammed named USTFCCAAA Atlantic Region Athlete and Track Player of the Year

Newark, NJ - In an unforgettable moment for Essex County College, two outstanding athletes, Mehdi Guerrah and Nafew Mohammed have made history by being named USTFCCCA Athletes of the Year for the Atlantic Region. This marks the first time in the program's history that both men's track and field awards have been earned in the same season, a testament to their incredible talent, relentless dedication, and hard work.

These two Wolverines have rewritten the record books with their impressive performances, setting the stage for what promises to be a bright future in track and field.

Mehdi Guerrah's achievements this season have placed him firmly among the nation's elite. Ranked in the top 10 nationally in the 400m hurdles, Mehdi has established himself as one of the most promising athletes in the country. Currently ranked 3rd in the nation, his performances have been nothing short of spectacular.

At the Larry Ellis Invitational, Mehdi posted a season-best 51.07 seconds in the 400m hurdles, solidifying his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the event. His 400m performances have also turned heads, as he continues to break personal records and contribute to the Wolverines' success. His hard work, perseverance, and tactical mastery on the track have earned him the distinction of being named Athlete of the Year for the Atlantic Region, and his future is incredibly bright.

Looking ahead, Mehdi will be taking his talents to the University of Maryland or Mississippi State, continuing his journey to the next level of collegiate track and field

 

Nafew Mohammed, on the other hand, has made his mark in the field events, breaking Essex County College's records in both shot put and javelin multiple times this season. Ranked 2nd nationally, Nafew's consistency and impressive performances have placed him at the top of his game.

At the Metropolitan Championships, Nafew threw a season-best 69.03m/226-6 in javelin, a stunning achievement that showcased his raw power and precision. He also set a new personal record in the shot put, with a throw of 12.54m/41-1¾ at the Big Hurt meet, further cementing his status as one of the top athletes in the nation.

With his impressive performances and record-breaking feats, Nafew Mohammed is positioned to continue dominating his events. He will return for another year at Essex, where he has the opportunity to earn two-time Athlete of the Year honors and further strengthen his legacy.

Coach Lionel Leach expressed immense pride in his athletes, highlighting their hard work, dedication, and potential for even greater success in the future. "Mehdi and Nafew have worked tirelessly all season, and their achievements are a direct result of their commitment to excellence. Both have the potential to go even further and achieve even greater things in their careers," Coach Leach said.
