Essex welcomes Savatheda Coke to the Wolverines Family

Newark, NJ - Essex County College Wolverines Athletic Department is happy to announce the hiring of Savatheda Coke as the sprint coach for the men's and women's cross country and track and field teams!

Coke is an alum of Michigan State University where she holds the records in both 100m and 200m. In 1997 Coke won both 100m and 200m at the outdoor NCAA Championship. She was the 1995 200m NCAA Champion and a second place finish in the 100m. In 2018 Coke was inducted in the Michigan State University Hall of Fame.

A former Olympian, World and NCAA champion who represented team Bahamas as a professional athlete. She is known for her participation in the women 4 x 100m relays that won gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and silver in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Coke was inducted in the Bahamas Hall of Fame in 2022 and in 2018 she was inducted in the Bahamas sports Hall of Fame. In July of 2023, Coke was honored by her country of the Bahamas during the countries 50th Independence Anniversary for her contribution to the growth, development, and recognition of the Bahamas. 

As a professional athlete Coke placed 6th in the 100m finals in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She was also a member of the 4 x100m relay team that won the 1999 world athletics Championships in Seville, Spain. She also won a bronze medal in the 1997 World Athletics Championship in Athens, Greece.

Coke earned her bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from Michigan State University in 1998.
